Onta ware was introduced by Korean potters who came to Japan during the Momoyama period (late 16th century), and is said to have passed on from Koishiwara Kiln (present-day Toho Village, Asakura County, Fukuoka Prefecture) to what is now Sarayama, Tsurukawachi, Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Over 300 years after its opening, the techniques from that time have been passed down and the kiln has been preserved. In the village of Onta ware, nine potteries currently produce pottery using only family labor, preserving the traditional techniques and traditions that have remained unchanged since the Edo period. Onta ware was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1995. Tobikanna is a technique in which a plane, which the craftsman has made himself using metals such as fire tongs or clock springs to make it easier to use, is placed against the surface of pottery that is being rotated on a kick wheel, and the recoil of the plane continuously carves marks to carve a pattern.
